Unreal Keyboards' HHKB Carbon Series: Unit 001 is the beginning of something we've been working toward for a long time: a fully tuned HHKB wrapped in authentic carbon fiber, built and finished to a standard that doesn't exist anywhere else.
This unit is the first of our prototypes being released as we refine the carbon fiber wrapping process in partnership with SMA Fabrication. Each prototype is a one-of-one piece; a unique combination of board, weave pattern, and finish that will never be repeated. Unit 001 is where it all starts.
The Board
The donor keyboard is a Printed Black HHKB Pro 2 (2007-10). It has been fully disassembled, ultrasonically cleaned, and rebuilt from the ground up. Nothing was left untouched.
The Tune
Every aspect of this keyboard has been tuned using the techniques documented in the Unreal Keyboards Topre Modification Guide, the same guide that has become the definitive resource for Topre tuning and has been widely referenced across the community since 2020.
- Authentic HHKB Type-S sliders installed throughout.
- Full lubrication using Krytox and TriboSys greases, lubricants, and oils per the modification guide.
- Diamond-polished housings and sliders: a new technique debuting with the Carbon Series. Each switch opening in the HHKB shell has been hand-polished using diamond compound, bringing the ABS mating surfaces to a mirror-smooth finish with minimal dimensional change. The sliders receive the same diamond polishing treatment. The result is a level of smoothness that goes beyond what lubrication alone can achieve.
The Wrap
The shell is wrapped in authentic carbon fiber by SMA Fabrication. Unit 001 sports a plain weave pattern with a gloss finish. The wrap covers the entire exterior of the top and bottom shell, transforming the look of the HHKB while preserving the original form factor, port access, and DIP switch functionality. The seam between top and bottom is cut after the wrap has been applied, ensuring a uniform and matching look. As Unit 001, this unit represents the first iteration of the wrapping process on the HHKB shell geometry.

These first Carbon Series prototypes are being used to perfect the technique of wrapping carbon fiber to the standard HHKB shell. Each unit is unique as we test different materials and techniques, incorporating lessons learned from the one before it. Each prototype unit will be released sequentially: when one sells, the next becomes available.
